With the support of the Association of Lebanese Industrialists (ALI), a very unique cooperation has been built between the American University of Beirut (AUB) and a Lebanese Paint Industry - Sons of Michel Boutros - where this latter has been recycling the Xylene solvent waste generated at AUB and reusing it in its production process. More than 2000 liters have been so far recycled.
The American University of Beirut (AUB) generates around 30 liters per week of Xylene solvent waste from its laboratories and research facilities, where they are usually collected in specific containers and exported for proper disposal in Europe in accordance to the Basel convention regulations.
Upon contact with ALI, the AUB was informed that the association had successfully installed 4 solvent distillers to recycle and reuse solvent waste of 4 paint and printing Lebanese industries.
Therefore, the AUB and the paint industry are collaborating to confirm another successful case of cooperation between the academic and the industrial sectors in Lebanon.
We believe that this is a very valuable solution for AUB's disposal of solvent waste, where the university has saved a lot of money from not shipping the waste to Europe anymore. Nonetheless, the paint industry has economized on the purchase of Xylene solvent since they are reusing the recycled waste back into their process.
